Maliq Veal has played the trombone since the sixth grade. He has studied under the tutelage of Jim Kelly, faculty at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, and Mark Hoelscher, professor of trombone at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and currently studies with Megumi Kanda, principal trombonist of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

A senior at Ronald Reagan High School, he is the principal trombonist in the wind ensemble and jazz band, under the direction of Adam Murphy, and is a baritone in the concert choir, under the leadership of Erica Brietbarth.

Maliq has been in MYSO for five years and is currently a trombonist in the Senior Symphony. In 2019, he was a member of the touring orchestra which performed in Ireland.

Since the spring of 2018, Maliq has studied conducting with UW-Milwaukee Professor Emeritus/Director of Bands Prof. Thomas L. Dvorak.

He has enjoyed playing in many different musical settings and styles including concert bands, symphony orchestras, jazz bands, marching bands, and pit orchestras. In addition, Maliq performs with a Mexican Banda, Banda Nueva Jalisciense, which maintains an active playing schedule around Wisconsin and Northern Illinois at various parties and events.

Maliq has had the privilege of playing under the baton of Dr. Frank Ticheli at the UW-Milwaukee Honors Band, first trombone under the direction of Prof. Dvorak at the UW-Platteville Honors Band, and bass trombone with the WSMA State Honors Band under Dr. Pamela Bustos, professor at UW-Superior.

This fall Maliq will attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he’ll be pursuing a degree in Music Education.

Maliq would like to recognize all of his music teachers and instructors for their guidance and instruction, as well as his parents, Latina and Rodney Veal, for their support, motivation, and love throughout the years.
