Daniel Duffy Named MYSO Philharmonia Music Director
10 JUNE 2014
MYSO is pleased to announce the hiring of Mr. Daniel Duffy as Music Director of MYSO’s Philharmonia Orchestra. Following a competitive selection process, Mr. Duffy was chosen as the top candidate to lead orchestral instruction of this full symphony orchestra.
Mr. Duffy has served as Director of Bands at Waukesha West High School since 2000, a role which includes management of two concert bands, symphonic winds and percussion, a wind ensemble, two jazz bands, a marching band, pep band, pit orchestra and a variety of additional ensembles serving 250 young musicians each year. Prior to his appointment at Waukesha West, Mr. Duffy was Associate Director of Bands at Kansas State University and Director of Bands at Rice Lake High School. Mr. Duffy holds a Master of Music in Conducting Performance from University of Cincinnati College’s Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from The Ohio State University.
Outside of the classroom, Mr. Duffy has shared his wide-ranging talents in music instruction throughout the state. He has served as the Assistant Conductor of MYSO’s own Summer Wind Ensemble, a Wisconsin State Honors Section Coach, Wisconsin All-State Band Chair and Board member of the Wisconsin Chapter of the National Band Association. In addition, Mr. Duffy has been a visiting lecturer at the University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Baylor University, University of Tennessee at Knoxville and Idaho State University, among others. An active percussion, horn, bass and baritone performer, Mr. Duffy’s significant work in youth music instruction has been recognized nationally as an eight-time recipient of the National Band Association Citation of Excellence.
As Music Director of MYSO’s Philharmonia, Mr. Duffy will be responsible for the orchestra instruction of more than 100 of the area’s most talented young musicians. Comprised of mostly high school age students, MYSO’s Philharmonia is the first of three full symphony orchestras that MYSO offers to its nearly 1,000 young musicians. For many, this experience presents the first setting in which students will perform with a full symphony orchestra, as well as their first opportunity to perform professional orchestral repertoire. Students in this ensemble rehearse weekly at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center, MYSO’s home, culminating in performances at such venues as Uihlein Hall of the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts and Carroll University’s Shattuck Music Center Auditorium.
“We are thrilled to add Daniel Duffy to our team of talented music educators, which include some of the most-respected in the area. Mr. Duffy brings a wealth of experience in working with talented and high-achieving young musicians which will greatly support MYSO’s mission of fostering critical thinking skills, creativity and collaboration through youth music training,” states Linda Edelstein, MYSO Executive Director. Mr. Duffy will begin his role as Philharmonia Music Director when the organization begins its 59th season in July, 2014.
