You can't learn how to play jazz by taking a few classes. You have to develop a ravenous passion that you feed by listening, transcribing, composing etc.- in essence, obsessing on the music above and beyond any assignments you are given. If you have this passion and nurture it, you will likely succeed both as an artist and as a human being.

Jazz Heritage Festival a Great Success!

We are pleased to share this feedback from some of the participants in the 2011 Jazz Heritage Festival.

Dear Barry:

I just wanted to thank you for the wonderful experience our Cudahy High School Jazz Ensemble members and I had at your MYSO Jazz Heritage Festival! The facility is fantastic, the clinicians were excellent, the feedback was very helpful, and the hands on approach of your master classes was very effective.

One of our jazz students remarked as we reflected on the experience in jazz rehearsal this morning that prior to your festival, this type of event was rather tedious for her, and she didn't really "get it" regarding the value of jazz and the excitement that could be experienced with this amazing art form, but that your festival, and especially the hands-on approach of the master classes really opened her eyes. What a testimony to how effective your festival was!

I really appreciated being in one location for the entire festival, the opportunities that your excellent scheduling afforded to our students to hear and be inspired by other young jazz musicians, the amazing players and teachers involved in the MYSO jazz program, and of course the fantastic lunch!

I won't hesitate to recommend your festival to other jazz directors in the area. Congratulations on a job well done, and thank you for providing such a valuable service to jazz education!

Jazz Heritage Festival 2011
Friday, January 28
Featuring Pete Zimmer

MYSO’s Jazz Heritage Festival is a wonderful way to showcase the rich jazz history of the Bronzeville neighborhood where MYAC is located.  Between 1900 and 1960, Bronzeville became a vibrant African American community, enlivened by night clubs, restaurants, and social centers focused on family and community-building.  And it was THE place for jazz in Milwaukee.

"Crackle-and-snap drummer Pete Zimmer spoke volumes with a few thumps of his snare."
FINANCIAL TIMES

"Pete Zimmer has learned his New York lessons well, as his dry tone, meaty swing beat and subtle accents make him an old hand on Chillin' Live @ Jazz Factory"

Eric Alexander

Boasting a warm, finely burnished tone and a robust melodic and harmonic imagination, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander has been exploring new musical worlds from the outset. He started out on piano as a six-year-old, took up clarinet at nine, switched to alto sax when he was 12, and converted to tenor when jazz became his obsession during his one year at the University of Indiana, Bloomington (1986-87). At William Paterson College in New Jersey he advanced his studies under the tutelage of Harold Mabern, Joe Lovano, Rufus Reid, and others. "The people I listened to in college are
