Announcing MYSO Auditions for the 2014-15 season
Be sure to complete the Student Information Form before your audition!
April 2-6, 2014
Call 414-267-2912 to make an appointment beginning March 3!
Dear MYSO Member,
Remember that every member in MYSO must play an audition in order to participate in MYSO each season. As in years past, your audition will consist of:
• a short solo or etude, approximately 3-4 minutes in length (no piano accompaniment). It is best if this solo includes passages of contrasting styles and/or tempos. Choose a piece that demonstrates your best playing.
• major scales
See the information below for specific requirements and details.
Take advantage of MYSO’s great summer programming. Visit our website for information on how to get involved, or call us at (414) 267-2906.

Playing Your Audition
In the 5-10 minute audition, musicians are evaluated on intonation, interpretation, tone, rhythm (particularly in the sightreading), overall technique and scale proficiency. Placement into a specific ensemble is based primarily on achievement in these areas, as well as on the difficulty of the solo played; age; musical, social and emotional maturity; instrumental need in the ensembles, etc. Our intent is to do what will be in the best interests of both the student and the overall MYSO program.
I. Scales: All musicians will be asked to play one or more major scales in as many octaves as possible, at the student’s prepared rhythm and articulation, in one or more of the following keys: G, D, A, C, B-flat, E-flat. Woodwind, brass, and percussion players should also be prepared to play A-flat and E major scales (anything up to 4 sharps or flats in the key signature). The scales we ask are specific to your instrument and not “concert pitch.” Advanced musicians may be asked to play additional scales.
II. Solo: Musicians must present a prepared solo or etude, no more than 3-4 minutes in length, preferably with contrasting tempos and/or styles (no piano accompaniment). We certainly want to hear you play music that is challenging and shows your ability, but whatever you choose should be played well.
Percussionists: Students must present a prepared solo or etude on either on the snare drum, xylophone, marimba or timpani (something brief on snare, timpani and a keyboard instrument is best). With regard to percussion equipment, all instruments will be supplied, but please bring your own sticks and mallets.
III. Sightreading from the judge’s material.
After the Audition
You will be notified by mail in mid- June regarding your placement into a MYSO group.
Please remember that MYSO members are expected to participate in their school music programs on the same instrument they play in MYSO.
